كانت الغواصات من الفئة الثالثة والعشرون عبارة عن سفن ساحلية صغيرة وسريعة، قادرة على البقاء تحت الماء إلى أجل غير مسمى، إذا سمحت الوقود، في البحر. وهذا جعلها شديدة الخطورة على الشحنات الحليفة وحماية أفضل بكثير من الإجراءات المضادة للحلفاء. كان عيبهم الرئيسي أنهم كانوا يحملون طوربيدات فقط، مما حد بشدة من فعاليتهم القتالية. ظهرت هذه الغواصات في الشهرين الأخيرين من عام 1944 فصاعدًا وكان الوقت متأخرًا جدًا ليكون لها تأثير كبير على الحرب العالمية الثانية.
