Clark & Co., which was first organized in January, 1837, by his father (whose biography is given in a preceding sketch), and his uncle on his mother's side, Edward Dodge. He received his education principally at the Central High School of Philadelphia, and entered the banking house as office boy in 1844. In 1849 he became a member of the firm, which, at that time, included Mr. Jay Cooke, whose biography also appears in this work.
