Elisabeth von Trapp is a folk singer, and where better to serenade a whole lot of folks than among the underground masses? She recently ventured here from her home in Vermont to pass an audition for Music Under New York, a free music series sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at several dozen stations. . Subway stations are just the latest offbeat venue for Ms. von Trapp, an established artist who lives in Waitsfield, Vt., with Ed Hall, her husband and manager. She has performed in fields at weddings, in barns at folk festivals and on hilltops and mountains. She has also sung the national anthem three times at Boston's Fenway Park, which is no small feat, according to her husband.

Her father, Werner, who was portrayed in the musical as the stoic Kurt, purchased a dairy farm about 35 miles south of the von Trapp family's New World homestead after he left the Trapp Family Singers. . Werner von Trapp died Oct. 11, 2007, at age 91.
