Au , le Centre des planètes mineures (MPC) répertorie 4 434 comètes, parmi lesquelles 452 sont numérotées (3 982 ne le sont donc pas).

Cette liste exclut les comètes découvertes par SOHO et STEREO qui n'ont pas reçu de désignation officielle par le MPC. Au , ces deux instruments ont découvert respectivement 4 272 et 119 comètes.
