يشمل هذا النوع من أدب السفر الأدب الخارجي (Outdoor literature) ودليل السفر (Guide book) وكتابة الطبيعة (Nature writing) ومذكرات السفر.[1][2][3] كان أحد علماء مذكرات السفر المبكرة في الأدب الغربي هو باوسانياس، الجغرافي اليوناني في القرن الثاني الميلادي. في الفترة الحديثة المبكرة، ساعد كتاب جيمس بوزويل (James Boswell) "جولة إلى هيبريدس (1786)" في تشكيل مذكرات السفر كنوع.
